FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Occupational Therapy? Occupational therapy (OT) helps individuals develop, improve, or regain the functional skills they need to participate in meaningful daily activities. For children, this often includes supporting their development in areas like fine motor skills, sensory processing, emotional regulation, and independence with self-care. Our goal is to help your child thrive in their daily routines, at school, and in the community.

What age groups do you work with? We work with individuals of all ages, from young children to teens and young adults. Our services meet the unique needs of each stage of development, including support for school transitions and life skills for older youth.

What types of challenges can occupational therapy address? Occupational therapy can support a wide range of challenges, including:

  • Fine and gross motor skill development

  • Sensory processing difficulties

  • Emotional regulation and social participation

  • Cognitive and executive functioning skills

  • Self-care and independence with activities of daily living (ADLs)

  • Sleep difficulties

  • Recovery from brain injuries or concussions

Where do you provide services? I provide in-home occupational therapy services in Port Moody, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, and Pitt Meadows. I also offer telehealth sessions to families anywhere in British Columbia.

Why choose in-home services? In-home services allow us to assess and provide recommendations directly within your child's usual environment. This approach helps us better understand the context of your child's routines and create intentional strategies to adapt for success. By working within the home, we can address challenges where they occur and ensure recommendations are practical and sustainable for your family.

Do you provide direct billing? Services are billed directly to the At Home Program. Autism Funding in British Columbia offers reimbursement for services to eligible families. For extended health plans, we do not provide direct billing; however OT services may be eligible for reimbursement. We are happy to provide detailed receipts and documentation to assist with your claims.

What is your availability? As much as possible, we offer flexible scheduling options to accommodate your family’s needs. We have limited spots available for after-school sessions, which may require joining a waitlist. If you have flexibility during business hours, we can often schedule sessions more quickly. Please reach out to discuss your scheduling preferences.

How do I know if occupational therapy is right for my child? If your child is facing challenges with daily activities, social participation or development, occupational therapy may be a good fit. I offer a free 15-minute consultation to discuss your child’s needs and explore how we can work together to support their goals.

What happens during an initial assessment? The initial assessment involves gathering information about your child’s strengths, challenges, and daily routines. This may include observation, discussion, and standardized assessments to better understand their unique needs. Together, we will set goals and create a personalized therapy plan to support your child’s progress.

What does a typical therapy session look like? Therapy sessions are unique to your child’s goals and may include hands-on activities, games, and strategies that are engaging and meaningful to them. Sessions often focus on skill-building, environmental adaptations, and coaching for caregivers to support progress at home.

Can you help with school-related challenges? Yes! We provide support for school readiness, executive functioning skills, and strategies to navigate transitions between grades or schools. We can also collaborate with educators to help your child succeed in the classroom.
